Connect two Computers without a Hub
Duane in California asks, "Is it possible to connect two computers without using a Hub or a Switch?"
Yes you can connect two PC's without a hub or a switch, but you need a different kind of Ethernet cable called a "crossover cable." Easy to get at CompUSA etc.
Regular Ethernet Cables are wired straight through, and crossover cables are wired: Pin 1 to pin 3, pin 2 to pin 6, pin 3 to pin 1, and pin 6 to pin 2. Crossover cables are frequently colored red, but you can't count on that convention always holding true.
Just go to the store and ask for a "crossover cable." As inexpensive as hubs are, you may just decide to buy one. You'll need a hub or switch as soon as you add a third computer anyway.
